Severe monsoon flooding has displaced over 80,000 people in northern Bangladesh as river erosion intensifies. Aid agencies are calling for immediate international support to address what they describe as a humanitarian crisis amplified by climate change.
Scale of the Crisis
The Brahmaputra river has eroded more than 12,000 hectares of agricultural and residential land since April. Entire villages have disappeared into the swirling waters. District authorities have set up 142 emergency shelters housing 80,000 displaced residents.
Aid Response
The government has deployed the army, BNCC and volunteer groups to distribute relief materials. International organisations including UNHCR, WFP and Red Crescent Society have activated emergency response plans.
