Dhaka Tops South Asia in Urban Green Space Initiative
A new UNDP-backed initiative will plant 2 million trees across Dhaka's 92 wards over the next three years, making it South Asia's largest urban afforestation drive.
A landmark urban greening initiative backed by the United Nations Development Programme will see two million trees planted across Dhaka's 92 wards. City authorities partnered with civil society, corporate sponsors and 10,000 volunteer community groups.
The Challenge
Dhaka currently has just 4.1% green space relative to its built-up area — far below the World Health Organization's recommended 9 square metres per person. Rapid urbanisation has consumed forests, wetlands and open land that once buffered the megacity against flooding and heatwaves.
The Solution
The 36-month programme targets rooftop gardens, roadside planting, school campuses and canal banks. Each neighbourhood ward has been assigned a Green Coordinator responsible for local mobilisation and maintenance.
