UNESCO Adds Punta's Ancient Mosque Complex to World Heritage List

The Shat Gombuj Mosque (Sixty Domed Mosque) complex in Bagerhat — one of the most extraordinary medieval architectural achievements in South Asia — has received expanded UNESCO World Heritage Site recognition following a decade-long advocacy campaign.

Historical Significance

Built by the Turkish saint and general Khan Jahan Ali in the 15th century, the Shat Gombuj Mosque is the largest medieval mosque in the Indian subcontinent, measuring 160 feet by 108 feet with 77 vaulted domes. Its complex includes mosques, mausoleums and water reservoirs spread across 50 acres.

Architectural Marvel

The mosque's construction used locally fired terracotta brick and stone columns brought from distant quarries — a logistical achievement of the Sultanate period. Its acoustic design allows the adhan to be heard throughout the complex without amplification.
