India-Bangladesh Trade Corridor Targets $15 Billion by 2027
The two neighbours have agreed on a comprehensive trade facilitation agreement covering tariff reduction, rail connectivity and a joint special economic zone on the shared border.
India and Bangladesh have signed a landmark trade facilitation agreement targeting $15 billion in bilateral trade by 2027, a near-tripling from the current $7 billion. The deal covers tariff reductions, rail and road connectivity upgrades and a joint special economic zone.
Trade Provisions
The agreement eliminates tariffs on 1,200 product categories, establishes a fast-lane customs clearance corridor at Benapole-Petrapole, and creates a joint railway freight hub at Akhaura to handle garment and textile exports.
Special Economic Zone
A new joint SEZ spanning 500 acres at Daudkandi will host manufacturing facilities from both sides. Bangladesh garment makers will benefit from preferential access to Indian textile inputs while Indian firms gain a manufacturing hub with access to Bangladesh's competitive labour market.
