Bangladesh Swimmer Ariful Islam Qualifies for Paris Olympics

Ariful Islam has become Bangladesh's first swimmer in 20 years to meet an Olympic qualifying standard, recording 47.82 seconds in the 100m freestyle at the Asian Aquatics Championship in Singapore — breaking his own national record by 0.4 seconds.

The Journey

The 22-year-old from Sylhet took up competitive swimming at age 12 in a club pool and secured a scholarship to train in Yokohama under Japanese Olympic coach Kazunori Tomita. Four years of gruelling training preceded this breakthrough.

Olympic Dreams

"I want to show the world that Bangladesh can produce elite swimmers," said Islam after the race. "This is for every child in Bangladesh who wants to swim."
